The Mercyhurst College women’s lacrosse team placed three student-athletes on the 2008 Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) Academic Honor Roll for their academic achievements in the classroom, announced Monday evening by IWLCA officials.

Recent graduate Courtney Olevnik and seniors Katy Miller and Elizabeth Wagner represent the Lakers among the 45 individuals who maintained a grade point average of 3.2 or higher during the 2007-2008 academic school year.

Olevnik, a computer information systems graduate, started in all 15 games at attack this past season, accumulating 21 goals and six assists for 27 points. She also picked up 28 ground balls and caused six turnovers. For her efforts, the Wooster, Ohio native was selected to the 2008 IWLCA / Under Armour North-South Division II Women’s Lacrosse Senior All-Star Game. Olevnik graduated from Mercyhurst ranking sixth all-time with 32 career assists.

Miller, a sports medicine major, played in 11 games at attack for the Lakers during the 2008 campaign. The Painted Post, N.Y. product set a career-high for points in a game with three goals and an assists against Rollins, while later tying that mark with two goals and two assists against Slippery Rock. She also contributed five groundballs, two draw controls and three caused turnovers.

Wagner, an elementary education major, started all 15 games at defense, where she helped the Lakers hold their opponents to just 7.80 goals a game. During that time, she ranked third on the team in ground balls with 31 and fourth in draw controls with 23.

Mercyhurst enters the 2009 season with high expectations as the Lakers join the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference. Under the direction of head coach Cecil Pilson, the Lakers return 24 players from a squad that set the school-record for wins in a season (12) and averaged nearly 16 goals a game in 2008.
