EDINBORO ANNOUNCES 2008-09 MEN’S BASKETBALL SCHEDULE

EDINBORO, Pa. – The 2008-09 Edinboro University men’s basketball schedule will have a new look with the addition of local rivals Gannon and Mercyhurst as members of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference. The Fighting Scots will now play home-and-home contests against the two Erie institutions as members of the Western Division, with Shippensburg moving over into the Eastern Division. Edinboro finished with a 24-7 record in 2007-08, finishing as the runner-up in the PSAC and advancing to the NCAA East Regional.
“We have another challenging schedule this year,” noted head coach Greg Walcavich. “The non-conference portion of the schedule has had to change because of the league changes. We don’t play West Chester, Millersville, Cheyney or Shippensburg, but by adding Alderson-Broaddus and Charleston, it remains a very challenging schedule.”
The Gannon and Mercyhurst contests are part of a 27-game schedule in 2008-09, with 13 at McComb Fieldhouse. The season gets underway on Saturday, November 15 when the Fighting Scots participate in the WCU Tip-Off Classic at West Chester. Edinboro will face Chestnut Hill the first day, followed by a game against Bloomfield on Sunday, November 16. Both schools are members of the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference.
The Fighting Scots return home to McComb Fieldhouse for their first home game on Saturday, November 22, hosting Penn State Greater Allegheny. That is followed by another contest against an NCAA Division III opponent, as Thiel will visit McComb Fieldhouse on Sunday, November 30.
The December schedule features three road contests against West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference foes. Edinboro will play at West Virginia Wesleyan on Wednesday, December 3, then plays at Charleston(WV), who was 19-10 a year ago, on Wednesday, December 17. The month concludes with a showdown between two 2008 NCAA playoff teams, as the Fighting Scots play at Alderson-Broaddus on Tuesday, December 30. The Battlers finished second in the WVIAC a year ago with a 26-7 record.
With 14 league games now in place, the PSAC crossover schedule has been reduced from seven to four games. Those games will begin in January. The first weekend of 2009 finds Mansfield (17-10) visiting McComb Fieldhouse on Saturday, January 3, followed by Bloomsburg on Sunday, January 4. The Fighting Scots hit the road the next weekend for what promises to be a very challenging two-game set. Edinboro plays at Kutztown, 19-9 a year ago, on Saturday, January 10, followed by a Sunday, January 11 tilt at East Stroudsburg. The Warriors were 18-10 a year ago, and both schools made the PSAC Tournament.
PSAC West action gets underway on Wednesday, January 14, as Edinboro’s final 14 contests are against PSAC West foes.   The Fighting Scots open PSAC West action against Lock Haven.
The following Wednesday, January 21, finds Mercyhurst visiting McComb Fieldhouse. The Lakers, 15-13 in 2007-08, will host the Fighting Scots on Wednesday, February 11. A week later on Wednesday, January 28 Gannon and Edinboro will square off in the first meeting between the two as league opponents. The first meeting is scheduled for McComb Fieldhouse, with Edinboro traveling to the Hammermill Center on Wednesday, February 18. The Golden Knights finished with a 26-5 ledger and played in the Great Lakes Regional.
Edinboro will face California(Pa.) for the first time since the Vulcans edged the Fighting Scots in the PSAC title on Saturday, January 24 at Hamer Hall. The Vulcans went on to win the East Regional and reach the Elite Eight, finishing with a 28-6 record. Edinboro will host the Vulcans on Saturday, February 21.
