Lady...
HERSHEY, Pa. – It was a clean sweep for the Gannon women's golf team as the Lady Knights will travel back to Erie with all three major awards handed out on Sunday at the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Women's Golf Championships. Gannon won the 2011 PSAC title, Amanda Teodorsson (Savedalen, Sweden / Porthalla) earned medalist honors and Kelly Nickerson (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Seton-LaSalle) received the inaugural PSAC Champion Scholar award.
The Lady Knights (315-319-634) ran away with the team championship, toppling three-time defending champion California (Pa.) by 13 strokes. The Lady Knights used a 14-stroke lead during the first round to run away from the eight-team field.
Individually, Teodorsson won medalist honors with rounds of 76 and 77. Her total of 153 was five strokes better than second place. The sophomore was the only golfer in the field of 38 to post sub-80 rounds on both days. She recorded only two birdies during the weekend, but finished at par on a field-best 24 holes.
Pushing Teodorsson all weekend was teammate Bhanisha Nagindas (Brampton, Ontario / St. Marguerite d'Youville), who finished tied for second place with rounds of 78 and 80. She shared second-place honors with California's (Pa.) Maria Lopez.
All-five members of Gannon's team placed in the top eight with Kiersten Klekner Alt (78-82-160) tying for fifth and Saskia Merz (85-80-165) and Nickerson (83-82-165) tying for eighth.
A new award for the PSAC this season, the PSAC Champion Scholar Award is modeled after the NCAA's Elite 88 award. The award honors the student-athlete with the top grade point average that is competing at the site of each of the PSAC's 23 team championship finals.
A Sport and Exercise Science major, Nickerson received the 2011 women's golf Champion Scholar award with a perfect 4.0 GPA. The senior is a three-time PSAC Scholar-Athlete and has twice received the Division II Athletic Directors Associtaion (DII ADA) Academic Achievement Award.
In the team standings Kutztown finished third (669), followed by Mercyhurst (689), West Chester (699), Clarion (724), East Stroudsburg (797) and Millersville (835).
The Lady Knights will concluded the 2011 fall season at the Grand Valley Invitational on Saturday, October 22 and Sunday, October 23.
