BayHawk talk reminds...
(Naming of the new basketball team in Erie reminded Jim Roddy of some Erie Wave stories. Jim was PR Director of the ill-fated team, and has plenty more stories. Some that shouldn't be printed, or even remembered. Thanks, Jimmy (I think) for the memories.)
As promised, here's some Wave player info. Keep in mind that the Wave was for the first 2 years the WORST team in the WBL. Some day in the near future, I'll send more info on the other WBL teams. * First, my Lowes Moore story. He was an assistant coach with the Wave in the 1992 season. A standout at West Virginia, he played parts of three seasons (1980-83) for the Nets, Cavs, and Clippers. My claim to fame is that Moore blocked one of Michael Jordan's shots ... and then while playing in a pick up game, I blocked one of Moore's shots. So I'm one person away from rejecting Jordan.
* Here are some of the best (and my favorite) Wave players ever: 1992 TEAM -- Richard Hollis -- Univ. of Houston, averaged 17 ppg at UH, was 1987 Junior College Player of the Year -- Marc "Showbiz" Brown -- Siena, MAAC Player of the Year -- Danny Jones -- Wisconsin, all-time leading scorer in Wisconsin history (until Michael Finley showed up) -- Speedy Jones -- Univ. of Maryland -- Kurk Lee -- Towson State, played 48 games with the NJ Nets
1991 TEAM -- Mike Morrison -- Loyola Md., drafed 51st overall in 1989 by Phoenix, played in 36 games for the Suns in 89-90, his wife was the lead female role in Spike Lee's "She's Gotta Have It" -- Jamie Waller -- DII All-American on Virginia Union team that lost at Gannon, drafted by the NJ Nets, played 9 games for them in 1987-88, all-time leading scorer in WBL history -- AJ Wynder -- Fairfield, Univ., played 6 games for the Celtics in 1990-91 -- Mark Stevenson -- Notre Dame/Duquesne, arrested twice at ND before Digger Phelps threw him off the team ... but what a jump shot! -- Greg "Boo" Harvey -- St. John's, legendary point guard there
1990 TEAM -- Scooter Barry -- member of Kansas 1988 National Championship team, son of Rick Barry -- Delray Brooks -- Indiana/Providence, he and Billy Donovan led the Friars to the Final Four in 1987, was national high school player of the year -- "Rocket" Rod Foster -- UCLA, named to the 1980 all-Final Four team, 2nd round draft pick by the Suns in 1983, played 207 games for them from 83-86 -- Troy Lewis -- Purdue, first team all Big Ten, helped lead the Boilermakers to the #2 national ranking -- Sherman Williams -- Indiana State, named one of the top 50 players in Missouri Valley Conference history -- Dwayne McClain -- Villanova, starter on 1985 national championship team
LOCAL CONNECTIONS -- Billy Wade and Sterling Washington -- Edinboro; Darryl Freeman and Chris Hollan -- Gannon; Michael Burnett -- St. Bona/Meadville, Bill Johnson -- Slippery Rock; Anthony Dickens -- Robert Morris/Vincent; Jonathan Roberts -- East Stroudsburg
