Gannon’s Tanner Furno (Columbus, Ohio/Whetstone) has been named to the Capital One Academic College Division All-District 2 third team released Thursday afternoon.
Furno was one of six student-athletes named to the third team and one of 16 student-athletes named to any of the district’s three teams. The sophomore owns a 3.92 cumulative grade-point average as a mechanical engineering major. On the court, he has averaged 6.4 points and 4.2 rebounds in 18 games this season. Eight of those appearances have come in a starting role.
A Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Scholar-Athlete, Furno is shooting 56.3 percent (45-80) from the field. He is hitting his free throws at a 78.1-percent (25-32) clip.
Furno has reached double digits in scoring six times this season. He was named 2009-10 PSAC Freshman of the Year after being selected PSAC Freshman of the Week five times last season.
The 2010-11 Capital One Academic All-District II men’s basketball teams were selected by members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). The first-team members will now move to the national ballot for Academic All-America consideration. The All-America teams are scheduled to be released Tuesday, March 22.
The District II College Division consists of all NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III, and NAIA colleges and universities in Delaware, the District of Columbia, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and West Virginia. To be nominated for the Academic All-America program, a student-athlete must be at least a sophomore with a 3.3 cumulative grade-point average and a starter or significant reserve on his team.
