Six named!

Penn State Behrend Director of Athletics, Brian Streeter, announced the College’s Athletics Hall of Fame Class for 2010. The class features six individuals: Carrie Nestor Bastow ’00, Katie Giles ’01, Chris Hughes ’00, Andy Lawrence ’00, Mary Good Lawrence ’01 and James Martin ’01. In addition, the Behrend Lions Athletic Association will also recognize four teams of distinction--the 2000-01 women's tennis, women's soccer, women’s basketball and the men’s cross country teams.

The induction ceremony and dinner will take place on Saturday, October 16 at 6 p.m. in the McGarvey Commons of the Reed Union building on Behrend’s campus. The induction will be apart of the Reunion Weekend activities.

Carrie Nestor Bastow, class of 2000, was one of the most decorated point guards in women’s basketball history.  A three-time All-AMCC second-team choice, Behrend’s Female and Scholar Athlete of the Year, she helped the Lions to three regular-season AMCC titles and capture the championship crown as a junior. 11 years after graduation, Nestor still owns the school records for assists (548) and steals (296).

Katie Giles, class of 2001, was a stellar soccer athlete for Lions.  A three-year captain, she led her team to four consecutive AMCC titles, four straight post-season appearances, and a trip to the NCAA tournament in 2000.  Giles earned AMCC Newcomer of the Year in 1997 and was named all-conference the next three seasons. She also was named the team’s Rookie of the Year and Most Valuable Player in 1998 and 2000.

Chris Hughes, class of 2000, made an impression on the men’s basketball program in his short two-year career at Behrend. He earned the top three honors the conference can bestow, AMCC Newcomer of the Year, All-AMCC First Team and AMCC Most Valuable Player. His senior year, he was named both Scholar and Male Athlete of the Year for the Lions.

Andy Lawrence, class of 2000, was a four-year starter and two-time All-AMCC first-team selection for the men’s basketball team. He led the Lions to their best finish in the NCAA Division III championship tournament as a senior captain, making the first-ever appearance in the “Elite Eight”. During Lawrence’s four years, Behrend went 80-31 and advanced to the ECAC Tournament three years in a row.  He is still scattered among the record books, including fifth all-time in scoring (1,296 points) and in three-point percentage (.450).

Mary Good Lawrence, class of 2001, earned All-Conference honors each of her four years on the volleyball team at Behrend, including AMCC Newcomer of the Year in 1997. As the second player to reach the 1,000 kill plateau, finishing with 1,028, she set four school records and helped the Lions win the regular-season championship as a freshman.  Good also earned the Leadership and Sportsmanship Award along with the Herb Lauffer Scholarship and Leadership Award.

James Martin, class of 2001, was a standout midfielder for the men’s soccer team from 1997-2000.  During his stellar career, he led Behrend to its first-ever AMCC Championships in 1997 and ECAC Tournament appearance in 2000. A three-time All-Region choice, two-time All-AMCC first-team pick, he went on to earn AMCC Most Valuable Player as a junior and was named an All-American his senior year.
