Boro wins!
EDINBORO, Pa. – The Edinboro men’s basketball team presented head coach Greg Walcavich with an early Christmas gift – a 76-66 win over a strong Charleston(WV) team on Saturday afternoon at McComb Fieldhouse. The victory left the Fighting Scots at 5-2 heading into final exams and the Christmas holiday, while Charleston(WV) falls to 4-3.
Four Fighting Scots scored in double figures, with Justin Moore and Al Muteba contributing double-doubles. Moore, a 6’6” senior, tied for the scoring lead with 17 points and pulled down 11 rebounds. Muteba, a 6’4” junior, added 16 points and 11 boards.
Freshman point guard Chris Klimchock continued to impress, finishing with a season-high 17 points and handing out seven assists while committing just one turnover. Cory Somerville battled foul problems but still managed 11 points and six rebounds.
Charleston also had four players in double figures, with Brandon Ross and Luc Atangana leading the way with 14 points. Leading scorer Ronald Kinney, who came in averaging just over 16 points, was held to 11 points on 4 of 11 shooting from the floor.
Edinboro held a comfortable double-figure lead for much of the second half after an 8-0 run gave the Scots their biggest lead of the game at 14:14 remaining. Freshman Anthony Lytle keyed the run with a jumper and layup, and Danny Walsh capped it with a three-pointer for a 56-39 lead.
The fighting Scots still held a 72-60 lead with just over two minutes to play when the Golden Eagles made their last run. They were helped as Edinboro missed the front end of three straight one-and-ones. James Eversley made a pair of free throws and a layup to pull Charleston to within eight at 72-64 with 1:46 to play. John White’s free throws with 45 seconds to play made it 72-66, but klimchock calmly stepped to the line and hit two free throws with 43 seconds to play, and then closed out the win with two more freebies with 21 seconds remaining.
The first half saw Edinboro run out to a 20-8 lead thanks to a 10-2 run featuring four points by Moore. Charleston stormed back to outscore the Scots 22-6 and take its biggest lead of the game at 30-26 with 4:14 left in the half. Edinboro closed the half on a 11-4 run – Muteba accounting for seven points – to take a 37-34 lead at the half.
Edinboro shot 44.1 percent from the floor (26 of 59) and Charleston was at 44.8 percent (26 of 58). The Fighting Scots held a wide 43-32 edge on the glass, and forced 17 turnovers while committing just 13. Edinboro also made 18 of 28 free throws compared to 10 of 16 for the Golden Eagles.
Edinboro will now break for final exams and the Christmas holiday before hosting another WVIAC team, Alderson-Broaddus, on Tuesday, December 29.
